Uses For A 7″ Tablet

One great use for my new 7″ Toshiba Encore Tablet is to use it as a media watching device while you are working out. I found the TWIT.TV app for Windows 8.1 and it works well. One question on this app is, why do they charge $1.49 for the Windows app but the IOS app I think is FREE?

I am still waiting for the keyboard and case I ordered for this tablet. I am also hoping that the new 10.1″ tablet I ordered will be in soon. But for now if you have a 7″ tablet there is a lot you can do with them. Just keep using them and don’t lay them down and forget them.

Are You A Mac Or A PC?

One time in life this question would have meant something to a lot of people. Apple Macs and PC’s once were not on the same playing field. And today I feel they really still are not but we will get there in a minute.

Today with the modern software we all love and use, and with great programmers bringing their products to both platforms we can now grab a computer and feel comfortable.

Working at a school I have found a few ways that one can not replace the other. In our Auto CAD lab we still need Windows to run their applications. We do however use IMac’s and dual boot them with Boot Camp. And I use a Mac for video editing because I prefer using Final Cut but there are great video applications for Windows.

What I’m really referring to is the core applications. Word, Power Point, Excel, Editors, Photo Editing Software. These core programs are now what is called cross platform. So don’t be afraid to pick up a computer and use it. You will be find using either a Mac or a PC.

One last thought is this; I really hate still today hearing. I can’t buy a Mac I would never figure out how to use it? Let me be the first to introduce you to the ICON. They are really the same on the Mac as they as on the PC. And I am not telling you one is better then the other. But I can say that your Mac will never need Antivirus and we never worry about Spyware or Malware? At the end of the day a computer is a computer. As long as you have any computer and you are learning how to use it then kudos!

Windows 8 Classic Shell

You have that shinny new computer and you just hate the new Windows 8 interface. As I wrote a before you could get use to the new Windows 8 interface. I know I had to give my brain a little time to adapt to the new system.

If you feel that you would rather have it the old way. In other words have your desktop look more like Windows XP and Windows 7. There are two way that you can do this.

The first and the one I recommend is to use Classic Shell. It is a FREE add on that you can download and install onto your Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 machine. It gives you that normal start menu that you are already use to using. Download Classic Shell here:

Next is from a company with the name of Star Dock. They have been making add ons for Windows for as long as I can remember. Let’s say that they make Windows more user friendly. They have a program called Start8. It is not free but works very well. You can check them out at their web site:

Which ever one you use, you will once again be one with your computer. Long live Windows 8? Please comment and let me know if these programs helped you.

Microsoft Surface and Windows 8.1

Are you using the new Windows 8.1? If you are using Windows 8 you need to download the FREE upgrade to 8.1. I have been working with this new version since RC1. There has been great improvements.

I am also looking into the Microsoft Surface. We have one of our staff that bought one and I have to say it is really cool. Move over IPad there is a new tablet in the market. I am still running many Mac’s in the house and at work, but I always tell everyone Microsoft has been a part of my career since 1990.

Stay tuned here for more Windows and Windows server updates. And don’t worry if I get a Surface I will do a unboxing and have that on the You Tube channel.
