Will Google and Chromebooks Replace PC’s

Chomebooks

I was walking through Wal-Mart the other day and seen this rather large display of Chromebooks. If you don’t know what a Chromebook is or how they work I will give you a little insight.

A Chromebook runs the lite version of a FREE operating system. When you open the Chromebook it will turn on and be ready in seconds. You log into the Chromebook with a Google account or just think of this as your Gmail account. So this is not Windows or an Apple Mac. It is a Chromebook. With the Chromebook, almost everything you do will be online. This means you will work on documents or spreadsheets on a browser.

I often get asked the question. Can you install Windows games on the Chromebook? The simple answer is NO! But you can play thousands of online games. The next question. Can you install any programs on the Chromebook? Well, the good news is YES! A few years ago Google opened up the Play Store on the Chromebook and now you can install Android Apps on the Chromebook.

So your last question would be why would I buy a Chromebook? This question is easy. If you don’t need large powerful Windows programs or some program that runs on a Mac then the Chromebook can be for you. If you never want your computer to slow down again and never get a virus or pay for anti-virus than the Chromebook is for you. If you would like to pay as little as $150.00 for a laptop that will last you for years then the Chromebook is for you!

My final thought is that you can even now use Microsoft Office Online. Of course, you need a paid subscription but it works well. I need to look into buying another Chromebook for myself. Since I am not working in schools at this point I don’t get to get my hands on them enough.

Chrome Book Day 5

Skype

I had to use Business Skype today and found a little quirk with the Andriod App. When I had the app open on my second monitor which I use in extended mode I noticed that when I bought the mouse on the laptop screen the Business Skype went blank. When I moved the mouse back onto the extended monitor the message came back.

This is still not enough reason to say not to get a Chromebook. You won’t always be using the second monitor and may never use the Skype Andriod App? But as I report to you the good points I felt it was only fair to report the bad findings.

I also tried to connect to our local shared drive off of one of our Windows servers. I only gave it a few minutes but could not connect. I will give that a little more attention today and see if I can connect to the local shared folders. I will give you more on that tomorrow.

Married To Microsoft Office

I had a great conversation with a technology director Steve who I met after attending a session about Virtual Desktops. I think we were both attending to try to keep one leg up on what is out there to use in our schools.

Steve introduced himself after the session. I mentioned in the session that we are using Google Chrome Books and Steve has an interest in doing the same thing at his school, they want to be more aggressive then our school and go 1-to-1. This is where every student will receive his or her own new shinny Chrome Book. Great idea!

The concern with his teaching staff as it was with ours in the changing from one office package said “Microsoft”, and moving to Google Docs. Will it be bold enough to write our lesson plans? Will the kids be able to learn how to attach the docs and send them to the teachers? All very common concerns.

The simple truth of the matter is, we should have never been married to any one piece of brand of software! This is the true fact that confused these very teachers now teaching in our classrooms. MS was shoved down their throats since they were little. Let’s STOP THE MADNESS!

Since we moved into the Chrome Book world our teachers and students thank me everyday. Can you laptops do this? Instant on, Battery lasting up to 14 hours on a single charge, Automatic saving of the projects they are working on. And on and on and on. When I have a teacher or student tell me thanks I know we made a positive impact on education. CHROME BOOKS AND GOOGLE DOCS, GO FOR IT!
